Mastaba of Mehu - Saqqara

USD 10

During the reign of Teti and Pepi I in the early part of the Old Kingdom's 6th Dynasty, Mehu was "Chief Justic and Vizier". He was married to Iku, who's titles included "King's daughter of His Body". His two other wives were Nebt and Nefertkawes. He was buried in a tomb at Saqqara, discovered by an Egyptian archaeologist named Zaki Saad, within the Sector of the Pyramid of Unas north of the Unas causeway and east of the mastaba of Princess Idut. The tomb was later excavated by Salam Hussein in 1940.

This tomb, which features four rooms decorated with some of the most colorful and exquisite reliefs in the whole Saqqara necropolis, is almost precisely aligned east-west, with the entrance facing east. It was only recently restored by the Egyptian Antiquities Organization.

At the entrance to the tomb, Mehu is depicted on either side of the doorway, A short passage leads from there into a small room with scenes of hunting and fishing in the swamps. On the southern left hand wall we find depictions showing the trapping of birds with nets, mending the nets and preparing food for the birds. On the eastern wall are reliefs depicting birds in their nests.

Egyptian Museum Day Time (8:00 to 16:00)

USD 15

The Egyptian Museum – The Amazing Museum of Antiquities

The Egyptian Museum, usually just called the “Museum of Egyptian Antiquities”, houses the world’s biggest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts.

Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, Cairo

Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, Cairo

The Egyptian Museum is conveniently located in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt. Cairo is also home to the country’s primary international airport, which in turn means that most Egypt tour packages start and end in Cairo, with travelers usually having several days to explore this enchanting city and the many infamous attractions located nearby.

Quite understandably, the vast majority of tourists rush to see the nearby Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx, but one should never make the mistake of thinking that Cairo itself has little in the way of attractions. To the contrary, Cairo is brimming with things to do and places to see, and you can be guaranteed that a visit to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo will be one of the highlights of your vacation in Egypt.

Egyptian Museum – An Attraction Not To Be Missed

Wide angle interior view of Egyptian Museum in Cairo from the first floorWide angle interior view of Egyptian Museum in Cairo

The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities was commissioned in 1835 by the Egyptian government who were desperate to stop widespread plundering and looting of the country’s many archeological sites. It was hoped that the museum would effectively be able to protect priceless antiquities that bear testimony to Egypt’s ancient past.

The Egyptian museum has fulfilled its role superbly, and today it is home to 120,000 Egyptian artifacts, although it should be noted that not all items are on display. Many items need to be stored under very exact environmental conditions in order to prevent rapid deterioration. Nonetheless, there are enough items on display to warrant spending at least one or two full days at the museum.

King Tutankhamen

A gold gilded object in the shape of a leopard found within the tomb of king TutankhamunGilded wooden ushabti found in the KV62 tomb of king TutankhamunGilded and faience inlaid fan found within the intact tomb of king TutankhamunPectoral with three scarab beetles clasped to a necklaceA game box and pieces for playing the game of Senet

Quite understandably, there is an entire section within the museum which has been dedicated to the boy king, Tutankhamen. He is after all the most famous of all the Egyptian pharaohs. Unlike many of the tombs which have been discovered during the years, that of King Tutankhamen was still relatively intact when it was initially discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter.

While the Tomb of King Tut had clearly been looted on two occasions, research suggests that the looting took place shortly after his death, and as a result, the vast majority of artifacts were left behind in the tomb. By the time excavation work was completed, more than 3,500 artifacts had been recovered, including the gold face mask which has since become a global icon of ancient Egyptian civilization.

The face mask, which is believed to be a representation of Tutankhamen’s face in this life, was crafted from solid and weighs in at 11 kg (24.5 pounds). The mask was found in its original position where it had been place over Tutankhamen , concealing the bandages that covered his head.

Other artifacts recovered from his tomb include a range of jewelry; vases; pots; a large finely decorated chest, and several weapons and instruments which historians believe he might have used prior to his death.

Museum of Egyptian Antiquities Jewelry Display

The Egyptian Museum houses a truly spectacular jewelry display, and one which is considered by many to be the world’s finest display. Coincidentally, the display also often includes two beautiful ivory and gold bracelets that were recovered from the tomb of Tutankhamen.

Perhaps the most striking thing of all about this display, is the fact that the items you look at have all been worn by people who lived so many thousands of years ago.

Ancient Sculptures

Sculptures were held in high regard in Ancient Egypt, and there served several purposes. As a result, sculptures of every shape; form and size have been recovered from Egypt’s archeological sites. Some have come from pyramids; some from the remains of ancient temples and monasteries, and some have simply been recovered from the desert sands. From tiny talismans to huge statues, the Egyptian Museum has enough sculptures to keep you busy all day.

Royal Mummy Room

The Royal Mummy Room at the museum never fails to impress visitors. In 1981, the then president of Egypt ordered the museum to close the Royal Mummy Room, but it was later reopened again in 1985, but with fewer mummies on display. The original room had 27 mummies on display, whereas the room as it stands today only has 11 mummies, including the most recently discovered mummy, that of Hatshepsut.

Dahshur Pyramids (Bent and Red Pyramids)

USD 10

Dahshur – An Ancient Royal Necropolis

Dahshur is an ancient royal necropolis located roughly 40 kilometer (25 miles) from Cairo. Located in the desert on the west bank of the Nile River, the necropolis is home to some of Egypt’s best preserved pyramids, the Dahshur Pyramids. According to archeological studies, the oldest of the Dahshur pyramids was constructed in 2613 BC while the most recently built pyramid is believed to have been built 2589 BC.

Many historians often refer to the Dahshur pyramids as being “true” Egyptian pyramids, largely because of the fact that they are among the oldest pyramids in the country. In fact, the two oldest pyramids in the country are found at this necropolis. Another remarkable aspect of these pyramids is the variation in design from one pyramid to the next.

The Bent Pyramid Of Dahshur

Bent Pyramid of Pharaoh Sneferu with its well preserved original limestone casingThe Bent Pyramid (aka False, or Rhomboidal Pyramid because of it changed angle slope)

The Bent Pyramid was built during the reign of pharaoh Sneferu and it clearly indicates a transition away from the traditional “step” pyramid design. It is also credited with being the first attempt at building a smooth sided pyramid. It is generally accepted that the smooth sides were intended to be a part of the design. The unusual shape of the pyramid on the other hand, is still the subject of much debate.

Some believe that the angled sides were part of the original design, while many historians and archaeologists alike believe that the builders of this pyramid realized that they were working at far too steep a pitch and quickly shifted to a gentler slope for the remainder of the building.

The Red Pyramid Of Dahshur

Red Pyramid of King Sneferu, DahshurThe Red Pyramid is believed to be the world's first successful attempt at constructing a true smooth-sided pyramid

The Red Pyramid was the first “true” smooth-sided pyramid ever built. Like the Bent Pyramid, the Red Pyramid was also built during the reign of pharaoh Sneferu. Many historians actually believe that pharaoh Sneferu had the pyramid built to serve as his own final resting place, but this has never been proven, even though human remains were recovered from the pyramid.

Unlike many of the pyramids in Egypt, visitors are actually allowed to enter the chamber in which the human remains were discovered. The Red Pyramid is also one of the best preserved pyramids in all of Egypt, and certainly worth a visit during your stay in Cairo.

Cairo Tower

USD 20

Cairo Tower – A Classic Landmark And Must See Attraction

Reaching 187 meters into the sky, Cairo Tower is undeniably one of Cairo’s most distinguishable landmarks, and one which is definitely worth a visit.

Cairo Tower seen from the Nile River

Cairo Tower seen from the Nile River.

Whether you’re travelling to Egypt to explore its many ancient sights and attractions, or whether you’re planning on have a relaxing holiday by the Red Sea, you’ll almost certainly want to spend a few days in Cairo. With so many things to see and do in and around the city, it can be difficult trying to decide which are the best attractions to visit. One excellent attraction is Cairo Tower, and it’s also a very convenient attraction because it’s located so close to the center of Cairo.

The History and Significance of Cairo Tower

By today’s standards, a 187 meter tower is certainly not going to be breaking any records, but let’s not forget that Cairo tower has been a part of the city’s skyline for nearly 60 years already. It was also the tallest structure on the African continent until 1971, when it lost its status to the Hillbrow Tower in Johannesburg, South Africa.

View of Cairo from the towerCairo city from Cairo Tower

Cairo Tower, also known as Borg al-Qahira in Arabic, is said to have been built to serve two purposes. It was to function as a television tower, a role which it still fulfills to this day, and it was also intended to act as a symbol of Egypt’s engineering capabilities at a time when there were already plans being drawn up for the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

Cairo Tower as it Stands Today

The tower, which is located the Zamalek district on Gezira Island in the River Nile is today best known for its observation deck and the revolving restaurant which sits on the top of the tower. Some visitors have commented that better cuisine can be found in many restaurants through Cairo, but the undeniable truth is that no other restaurant can offer its diners the same sort of views. The restaurant slowly rotates, completing one rotation every 70 minutes.

Another great thing about Cairo Tower is the fact that it stays open throughout the day and well into the night, making it possible for people to visit the observation deck at night as well. Cairo at night, as seen from the observation deck, is a sight not many visitors are likely to forget. If the sky and the city below don’t satisfy your appetite for twinkling lights, then fear not because there are more lights waiting a few floors down.

That’s right, start heading down towards the ground floor, and you’ll come across the vibrant and very popular Legends nightclub, complete with good quality lighting and audio, not to mention the most amazing belly dancing shows that take place regularly.

Visiting the tower during daylight hours might not dazzle like a nighttime visit will, but the views from the tower are quite simply breathtaking. Not only can you see most of downtown Cairo, but you also see Egypt’s most iconic landmarks in the distance, the Great Pyramids of Giza. Sure, they are some distance away, but there’s just something magical about actually seeing them there in the distance.

If you really do need a closer look (most visitors do) there are a number of telescopes set up on the observation deck. Turn your scope to the west and you’re greeted by the pyramids and the vast desert beyond, while facing your scope east will give you a great view of the medieval quarter.

It would be foolish to put Cairo Tower in the same class of Egyptian attractions as the pyramids; temples and so on, but it is certainly worth a visit if your Egyptian break includes a few days in the capital. Only a limited number of package tours include a visit to Cairo tower, but standalone tours are readily available.

Explore the Best of Cairo

The mastaba of Mereruka in Sakkara

USD 15
The mastaba of Mereruka is situated in the north-east sector of the necropolis of Saqqara, not far from the edge of the plateau, just to the north of the pyramid of Teti, the first pharaoh of 6th Dynasty. During this period power of the pharaohs was declining as can be seen in the comparatively small size and poor construction of their pyramids. However, increasing power attained by the large aristocratic families became apparent in the size and quality of the decoration of their mastabas

Cairo Tower

Cairo Tower – A Classic Landmark And Must See Attraction

Reaching 187 meters into the sky, Cairo Tower is undeniably one of Cairo’s most distinguishable landmarks, and one which is definitely worth a visit.

Cairo Tower seen from the Nile River
